NEVER talk down to a Martial Arts student in Surrey and Delta! Engage in a dialogue filled with respect and honor so as to raise a leader filled with integrity and self worth.
For the entirety of my life, I rarely talk down to anyone. This concept stems from how my parents raised me with honor and wisdom. Arrogance and a lack of humility usually leads to people who talk down to others in a callous way. It is unacceptable and only brings harm to the community in my opinion. The reason for this Surrey Martial Arts BLOG is how to I approach interacting with Surrey Taekwondo kids and the proper approach for success in changing the path of a student. As a backdrop to my experience with kids is my 50 yrs of Taekwondo interactions with students in Delta, Surrey, Newton, Langley, Fort Langley, Burnaby, and New Westminster martial arts students. In addition to my Taekwondo instructor’s experience, I have also devoted decades of instruction as a Sunday school teacher to students ranging from kindergarten; all the way up to college students. Yes, there were good and not so good experiences. However, I have always tried a way to connect with people whether they are kids or adults. This was a top priority to me as an innate quality that God touched my heart with. A crucial concept is to NEVER talk down to anyone; whether they are a child or teen or an adult. Nobody enjoys being talked down to. It is a form of arrogance and gas lighting which usually is a tactic used by manipulative people; usually to get a false sense of superiority due to a lack of confidence. Students of all ages seem very receptive to the approach I take as a teacher of martial arts or Sunday school teacher in Delta, Newton, and Surrey areas. I ask my Taekwondo students, time to time, what is it that you like in the approach I teach you? Their following answers are usually: 1. I appreciate how you don’t talk down to us like most grown ups 2. How you are sincere and seem like you really care 3. The extra effort and time you put in to spend time with us during class As an adult and/or instructor of Taekwondo and Martial Arts in Newton, Surrey, or Delta, I treat everyone with respect; up til the point where they show me otherwise. I give everyone the upfront attitude that they are a person worthy of respect and honor. I tell my students a saying I learned from my World Famous Taekwondo father. My Surrey Taekwondo dad would say in class, “ Respect given is respect earned!” I cannot demand respect from my students. It is something that which should be earned. Sure, no one is perfect; but there is nothing wrong with trying to be the best person from within. I don’t spend much time on my failures; but instead, I learn from each failure so as to project my life in the positive direction that is intended! This concept is paramount to one who wishes to live with integrity. Of course I agree that usually adults have garnered more wisdom and experience than that of a child. I am not saying otherwise. However, do we really need to rub it into the face of a young child? A child is in the early stages of trying to determine what he/she stands for in life and can be an incredibly difficult journey in today’s tech world. That said, more knowledge does not equate to more maturity in my opinion. Children are exposed to too much at an earlier age than I am accustomed to. Back in the 70’s, our lives as children were way more simplified. We worried about good marks, making good friendships, and pimples. Nowadays, too much is thrown at children unnecessarily! They grow up way to quick. It’s like kids turning from 6 years are going onto 16 as the old adage goes. More than ever, kids need to be talked to in a straight forward and honest approach. Kids test us more today than of yester years. Kids just want to be respected for who they are. Sure, they need discipline when its appropriate. But for the most part, they just want to feel that someone hears them for who they are. At my Surrey and Newton Jong Kim Martial Arts school, I listen to each child intently and with purpose! They are real people with real feelings with real heart. You want to know the truth about something? Ask a kid!! They usually never lie and tell you as it is; not as you wish their response to be. This is the reason we need to respect children for their truthful qualities; something most adults have learned to twist as they get older. I know, I’m guilty of this at times. Remember, no one’s perfect right? My few favorite school and university teachers all had these same great qualities as outlined above! Ms Booth; my fantastic grade 3 teacher. Dr Yorke grade 12 honors Biology teacher. Ms Jeanine 2nd yr Criminology University SFU. Mr Sullivan Philosophy 200 SFU. They have left a profound impact on my character to this day; in which I am eternally thankful for! To truly have a connection with a Taekwondo or martial arts students in Newton, Surrey, or Delta, a martial arts instructor needs to be genuine and thoughtful. The second point is to demonstrate true sincerity in your approach with kids. Remember I told you that kids are the most perceptive human beings? They are! They notice the small things that most adults miss. They pick up on the kind words you use towards them in our Surrey and Newton Taekwondo Classes! I see it all the time; everyday!! When a child knows feels you are genuine, they are more likely to reciprocate respect and follow complex taekwondo or martial arts drill routines! They tend to persevere and not give up easily as a result. This yields tremendous results. These Taekwondo students reaps self worth, confidence, and resilience; something every parent longs for their martial arts child and future adult! Thirdly, go the extra mile with the Newton and Surrey taekwondo kids during classes! I do!!! Actions always speak louder than words! I can tell my students I care but it doesn’t really come into focus until I SHOW THEM I CARE during our Surrey and Newton Jong Kim Martial Arts classes!! Everyday, I intentionally try to make each student feel special! They deserve it! A martial arts instructor and student relationship is quite special to me. It is an opportunity to raise the next gen of future adults who work hard, never give up, and with strong ethical character! The bible says that one who cannot be trusted with an egg, will never be trusted with greater things. I tell my students to do the right thing even if no one sees you! As a Surrey or Delta parent, don’t we all wish our kids would do the right thing? Of course we do! We cannot be with our child 24/7. We cannot see them being tempted to lie a little, cheat a little or steal a little can we? During my surrey and Newton Martial arts classes, my students do not think I see everything that goes on. Boy are they wrong! Through my intense sparring sessions, I learned that seeing things in the corner of my eye comes in handy against 100 kph kicks and punches coming from all angles! Sure I may miss a few things here and there but I am quick to see things that can potentially arise; good or bad and take swift measures accordingly. I usually don’t do this but on odd occasions I spend my free time on weekends with a select few of my Surrey and Newton Taekwondo students. If I know a child’s father has abandoned them, I’ll cheerfully ask permission to play soccer with them or whatever they are interested in. I’ll buy them ice cream afterwards or take them to PNE if I know they are financially challenged. I always ask respectfully and thoughtfully! This is key in my opinion. It matters how you treat someone with respect! I do no do this for praise or accolades. Actually, this is the first time I mentioned this to anyone; not even my family or wife knows I do this on the odd occasion. I do this because if I switched places with that student of mine; I sure would wish someone would care; like really care; not because they have to, but because they really want to! I challenge you all to show kindness and respect to young ones; whether they are your children, your friend’s children, or your family. Love never fails! I have seen the fruit of my enjoyable labor. You will reap what you sow! So everyone, go reap a harvest where kindness and respect permeates every aspect of your life! This is my approach to my taekwondo and martial arts students in our Delta, Newton, and Surrey area! I learned this from my father. He set this example early on in life towards me and I am so thankful my dad and my master had and has such a crucial influence on my life! In life, an incredible superpower is the idea that one’s life is destined for greatness! As a new immigrant to Canada more than 50 yrs ago, I had everything going against me. I had to learn French, English, Italian, and Korean; all at the same time. I was born with bad vision and serious coordination challenges. Do you think this stopped me?! NO! My parents raised me with incredible discipline and focus. This in turn, gave me a heart that quitting never was an option! Excellence comes to those who battle challenges and overcome! Applying discipline drove me to be more than who I was yesterday. Step by step, skill sets resulted. Multiple languages were learned, academics increased, physical skills improved. Today, we do a great disservice to our kids if we coddle them and try to protect them too much. My generation of parents let ourselves work out the tough times and we prevailed as a result. We feel much greater satisfaction when we overcome momentous challenges and look back at all we accomplished! Martial arts in Surrey and Delta at the Jong Kim Martial Arts schools help students rediscover the inner power from within! This perseverance that Taekwondo teaches is worth millions in my opinion! One of Taekwondo’s main tenets is to garner “indomitable spirit!” We never let our Surrey martial arts students to give up on themselves! We push and encourage them beyond their limits. Only until they overcome each challenge, can they feel a true sense of pride. Surrey Taekwondo students start to really believe that hard work does pay off! Instructors mentor kids to keep moving forward on new techniques or physical boundaries. I encourage my students but I also push them further every day. I ask them do try 1% better everyday in each Surrey Taekwondo class until they are prepared to take on further kicking and punching challenges. Students do not realize their potential and how far they really can go in our Surrey Taekwondo school! They only see what’s in front of them. I see where they can be! This is crucial! I have been in their shoes many moons ago. Back then, my father and teacher, knew my true potential! This is why he pushed me beyond my limits. I remember one day he asked me to kick the heavy bag 1000 times without ceasing. Of course I lost wind after a few minutes of full forced kicks. He didn’t let me stop until I completed the task hours later. To develop my knifehand for board breaking for my first black belt test, he made me knifehand chop a small tree in our backyard. He said chop 1000 times everyday for 2 weeks. With blood and callused hand I persevered til the task was completed. Through these tough times, I never gave up! I didn’t know the word give up! This is one of the best gifts Taekwondo in Surrey and Delta gave to my character. Today, I am more than who I was yesteryear! Thank God! Delta and Surrey martial arts and taekwondo gave me the attitude of “ I CAN DO IT !” It’s really true that quitters never win and winners never quit! Upon digesting this concept into our hearts and minds, can anything prevent success? No! One Taekwondo master’s motto is I can do, he can do, why not me?! I tell my young students this before and during challenging Surrey martial arts drills and exercises. Their tiredness is replaced with a sense of hope that all things are possible to those who never give up! I remember in my first few years of university I got really low scores. I was used to being a straight A student up til grade 12. I became overwhelmed and I could only see the mountain ahead of me. I wanted to give up so many times. Instead, I calmed down and logically took steps to relax and discipline my study schedule into small achievable steps every day. On a big white board in my room, I laid down my study schedule and assignments hour for hour 1 month ahead of time. Every day I took a small chunk of assignments and accomplished the task due each day. My grades went from c+ to B+ and A’s. During my 3rd year I even scored a perfect 100% score on a final exam. All of this would not have been possible if I cowered down and gave up. Instead, I utilized what my dad’s taekwondo life skills he taught me during classes. My Surrey Taekwondo skills increased dramatically, my academics increased, and most importantly, my outlook on life became great! This is all thanks to my father and my master in Taekwondo! I owe him everything I am today! Passing on this great legacy of teaching ideals became paramount as I look forward to seeing new taekwondo students joining my academy every week! They don’t have the slightest clue in how I already am thinking and preparing their future through martial arts! My dream isn’t for them to necessarily become a taekwondo world champion; my main goal is for them to champion their life! To me, I use my Delta and Surrey martial arts program as a conduit to achieve much more! I develop their minds and hearts and shape it like a potter shapes the clay. Just the other day, an extremely and shy girl joined class. She was extremely timid. In my mind, I was already contemplating how I was going to develop her confidence through martial arts in Surrey and Delta training center. I plan to gently encourage her until her self esteem grows. When she is ready, I will start pushing her with further gentle encouragement. One day, I hope I can challenge her to extremes. When gold metals are purified, the result is 99.99% gold! I plan to make her know her true self worth by building character through physical martial arts challenges. I mentor by words. Words can destroy or build up! I choose the latter. Being one who has overcome many many challenges in life, I know what it takes to come out tougher, stronger, and more resilient through my dad’s guidance in our family’s Delta and Surrey Martial arts and taekwondo academy. Taekwondo is not just kicking and punching. Our surrey taekwondo is so much more! It is a safe place where students are surrounded by peers and instructors who really care. I care where my kids in taekwondo will end up in life! It matters! Know that if you encourage and guide someone to greatness, that this is so incredible! Delta and Surrey Jong Kim Martial Arts changes and mentor kids lives. I pass on the Kim family legacy to every student to wants to learn Delta and Surrey martial arts! Remember, you CAN DO IT! You can achieve greatness! But you can’t achieve until you dream it, work it, and achieve it! After all, isn’t HOPE so powerful? I believe HOPE epitomizes a much needed place in the hearts of every Surrey martial arts kid’s heart! As Martin Luther King Jr said, “Keep Hope Alive!” He sure had wisdom! How Taekwondo and Martial Arts in Surrey and Delta Delivers True Meaning into the lives of kids?
As a taekwondo expert for more than 50 years, I asked myself why some of my students stay for years; if not decades with me as their Taekwondo instructor? Sure, some students stay for a season or two but still there are many that have been with me for 10 or 20+ years! I outline my assumptions in the following breakdowns.
Major kids study asks what kids really need and want in life? As parents, our primary concern in life is the well-being of our children. Making our kids feel safe means we need to offer nurturance, care, concern, warmth, and affection. Navigating on the myriad of options of how to achieve this momentous task can seem overwhelming at times! Take heed! There is an answer! Kids, in martial arts in Surrey and Delta, are extremely astute in observing slight nuances in how people treat others. They are very perceptive and take in everything. They quickly can ascertain if someone is using them or if someone offers genuineness. I sometimes ask my long-term students why they stay so long at my taekwondo academy? The most common reason is they say, “ because you are kind and sincere.” I get blown away by this because it really humbles myself. Initially when a student joins, I think of several things in my reasoning on how I can satisfy my child clients. I ask are they here because they are bullied? Are they here because martial arts is cool? Are they here because they didn’t get fulfillment from playing team sports such as soccer or football? Then I ask the deep question. How can I make this kid feel better about themself and how to use Taekwondo as a conduit to achieve the end goal in order that the students is nurtured properly. I really do try to sincerely care for the needs of each of my students! They are here for a reason that is much deeper than the outward perceived notion that they want to defend themselves or just learn cool taekwondo moves. I tell everyone that I do not teach kids how to kick and punch; of course I do but I use taekwondo as a conduit to develop a student’s life to be more fulfilled and to have a greater sense of purpose in life! Every spare moment I have at the dojang, I try to ask insightful interactions with my students. Whether it be before class or during class or after class. I try not to ask questions where the answer is a simple yes or no. I believe this is a common mistake parents make; I am guilty of this also. Instead, I ask more thoughtful questions such as , “who made you smile today at school?” These are truly the questions kids want from their parents. I believe the reason is that it shows you want to really see life from the child’s perspective. And moreover, it shows you are genuine and sincere! At my Jong Kim Martial Arts school in Surrey and Delta, I ask such questions in which the student becomes front and center and I , as their taekwondo instructor, takes a back seat. This is paramount in my opinion. It opens a dialogue of sincerity; from which, a stronger bond develops. I become more than just someone who teaches them cool karate moves; I become someone who can now really influence and shape a child’s mind. I use this to develop their confidence, self worth, and self esteem. Kids who feel valued and cared for often have a higher propensity to perform at high levels in life; whether is taekwondo kicks or academics or just having pride in keeping a well-kept bedroom. Kindness is a superpower! It builds people up! Anyone can quickly destroy someone with some hurtful words; but one who builds others up are usually encouragers. To have this mind set takes an instructor who is emotionally balanced and one who has deep empathetic nature to care for others; sometimes at the expense of themself. Healthy minded people can do this! This is why I place utmost importance on kindness and sincerity in the way I teach and mentor my kids martial arts in Surrey and Delta area. The same philosophy holds true in my Surrey and Delta Taekwondo programs. Depression has taken on an uptick in society. It is one of the most destructive forces right now in the lives of kids and adults alike. As Surrey’s population continues to explode, so does loneliness. You would think that people would have more friends in a bigger city; but actually the opposite is true. In addition, technology also has its hand in creating more solitary lives. This is all the more reason, I believe the kind of community a martial arts school in Surrey and Delta becomes so important! The reason I hand pick who is allowed into my school is not because of elitism. I carefully decide that only kind people and kids gain admittance. I believe atmosphere and quality of the hearts of kids will foster others to become so much more! My students tell me, “ I wish you were the principal of my elementary school!” I say why? They reply because then school would be a place I would want to go to! I think kids just want a small inner circle of friends who really support each other. Isn’t this what we all want and need? When we go through some rough patches, don’t we want a consoling and objective confidant who can support us? This is what I and my taekwondo students attempt during our interactions at the Surrey martial arts school. Encouragement and a supporting atmosphere is where taekwondo students can develop resilience in life. As they reach physical challenges in learning new taekwondo technique, students realize they can achieve through not giving up! They ascertain that effort counts in life! As Rocky says, “ it’s not how hard life hits you! You gotta get up and keep moving forward! That’s how winning is done! You got a dream? Go get it! Do whatever needs to be done to achieve it!” To me, success and failure is not dependent on whether you actually achieve something necessarily; TRUE SUCCESS is how much EFFORT one puts into solving challenges in life. To me, these are true winners of life! People who digest the true meaning of perseverance! At Jong Kim Martial Arts in Surrey and Delta, I do not teach taekwondo! I use Taekwondo to develop self confidence, discipline, and PURPOSE! A kid who has true purpose, never fails! But instead, has a very bright future lying ahead! This is what Taekwondo really should do for each student that walks through the doors! With the support of parents, every child CAN DO IT! I am so thankful to the great hearted kids God has brought to me! I am the richest instructor, at heart, in the world because of my students!! This is true living in my opinion. Sincerely, Master Edward Kim 9th Dan Degree Black Belt www.jktkd.ca Jong Kim Martial Arts – Surrey – Taekwondo. Parents who wish their child to get a head start in life are turning to martial arts – taekwondo in Surrey and Delta. They know martial arts provides focus, discipline, and leadership skills. But when is the earliest age that is best? This is the million dollar question! From my 50 years experience as a student and instructor in Taekwondo and martial arts in Surrey and Delta, I outline which dynamics can answer this question:
Best Age to Start and why? Being a Korean parent, myself, we are particular driven to squeeze out as many life skills for our children at a young age. We put them in martial arts, music lessons, language lessons, Kumon, etc. We wish the very best future success for our kids and you are no different! To put it simply, there is no direct best answer but there are educated answers that fit each unique child. Children have different personalities which cannot be compared to others. They are unique! And as such, I answer according to this main premise. At Jong Kim Martial Arts in Surrey and Delta, we look at 5yrs old being the earliest to get the best bang for your buck! The reason is, this is the age they start to enter kindergarten; where kids initially learn social behavior requirements, following a structure routine, and expected norms for behaving through social interaction of what is acceptable or not behaviour. This coincides with a kid’s taekwondo program in Surrey and Delta! They form an important symbiotic relationship conducive to a child’s success in whether they can follow a kid’s program or not. Taekwondo or martial arts is meant to build a foundation of structured lifestyle, acceptable behaviour, learning basic taekwondo skills, discipline and focus in Surrey and Delta kids. They must all be intertwined in order to produce successful skill-sets which every parent longs for their kids. Intangible passion a child has for martial arts! Some kids who join martial arts in Surrey and Delta, have this incredible passion for taekwondo! Whether it stemmed from watching Cobra Kai or seeing a karate cartoon. This piques an incredible passion to this exciting martial arts craze. Their focus for martial arts can be so tunnel visioned that it can create a mind-set for that child to excel in karate program!!! Have you ever loved learning something in which you passion directly correlates to your success? Sure, of course! We all have; be it model building, learning to cook, etc. Kids martial arts is no different. An excited and enthusiastic child for martial arts drives them to do whatever it takes for mom and dad to let them join and to stay within the program! Passion goes a long way in life and taekwondo can be a catalyst for success in many areas of school life; such as academics, improved listening skills, and doing chores at home! Intent on purpose of putting child in martial arts program? Intent can be broken down, generally, into two different camps of thought reasoning.
Authoritative parenting is a parenting style or approach in which parents are responsive, supportive, and nurturing while setting firm limits on their children. Authoritarian parenting is another parenting style or approach in which parents are very rigid and use tough rules to control children’s behavior. At Jong Kim Martial Arts in Surrey and Delta, we believe the best approach to teach kid’s martial arts is a combination of these two ideals! And we have seen excellent results when sincere care goes into teaching kids. They are not just customers! Kids are human beings who needed to be treated with respect, honor, and valued self worth! Healthy kids are those whose parent and teachers set healthy boundaries of social behavior; as a major study has proven. They want and need guidelines to what is acceptable or not acceptable in their life’s boundaries. Skill sets of instructors that are conducive to kids enjoying their martial initial experience? Instructors who excel are those who are personable! They must genuinely have a heart for patience and understanding when it comes to instructing kids in martial arts in my opinion. Instructors need to be the adults; but at the same time, look at teaching from the perspective of a child. By incorporating this frame of thought, instructors can be extremely effective in their endeavour to introduce the proper foundation necessary for success in martial arts in Surrey and Delta! In summary, some kids have the above attributes as early as 4.5 yrs; while others start to have it at 8-10 yrs of age!
