Grandmaster Jong Chan Kim: A Global Taekwondo Pioneer

Our founder, Grandmaster Jong Chan Kim, is a world-renowned pioneer who helped shape modern Taekwondo. He was a founding member and one of the first 9th Dan Black Belts in Taekwondo history. After his skills captured the attention of Taekwondo founder General Choi Hong Hi in 1955, Grandmaster Kim became a key member of the World Demonstration Team, traveling the globe to spread the art. His vast experience in Taekwondo, Karate, and Judo has made him a true martial arts icon.

The legacy of Jong Kim Martial Arts continues with Grandmaster Edward Kim, a 9th Dan Black Belt and son of Grandmaster Jong Chan Kim. Raised in a disciplined martial arts environment, Edward opened his first academy at just 16. Today, he is a celebrated instructor who has mentored countless national and international champions. A recipient of the World Taekwondo Hall of Fame Instructor Excellence Award, he personally instructs beginner classes, ensuring every new student experiences the "Jong Kim Difference."
Master Edward’s mentorship extends far beyond the martial arts world. Many of his students have gone on to excel in fields like medicine, law, business, and military service. Through his guidance, students learn that character development is just as important as physical skill, making them not only better martial artists but better individuals. |

Master Edward Kim is presented with Taekwondo Hall of Fame Instructor Excellence Award for his contributions in Taekwondo to Surrey, Delta, Langley, and Greater Vancouver region. This award represents a lifetime culmination of commitment to excellence in sharing the beauty of Taekwondo. Master Edward Kim started taekwondo in preschool, opened his first school at age 16 in Fort Langley, and creating community awareness of prosperity in students for decades in life achievements. I am honored and humbled. My life's goals continue to this day.

My son went through a tough time in school getting bullied through elementary and most of high school. Master Kim taught my son how to respect and love himself and helped groom him into the confident, strong willed man he is now. I can never thank him enough for helping to shape him and teaching him the art of self discipline, self worth and the strength to succeed in his life. Not to mention he is a tough individual. I have been practicing boxing with Master Kim for eight years, and I have learned a lot during these eight years. How to kick, how to fight. My Surrey - Newton taekwondo journey started back in 1973. My incredible World Famous Father presented me with 9th DAN Black Belt in Taekwondo Surrey and Delta. My father has guided my life with truth and meaning. I owe him my livelihood; a life where I fortunately met the best of the best of honorable martial arts students in Newton, Surrey, Delta, Langley, and Vancouver has to offer. Jong Kim Martial Arts Surrey has been pivotal in my life! I am the man today because of how my dad raised me to be genuine and kind to those around me. I am forever thankful God allowed my father to be who he is! The journey never ends! My journey continues today; to instill a touch of what my father instilled in me concerning matters of virtue! It's a wonderful day to be with my father, my taekwondo brothers and my students! Truly, a life worth living!
