Building Community Through Martial Arts: Jong Kim Martial Arts' Impact in SurreyAt Jong Kim Martial Arts in Surrey, BC, we've discovered that true martial arts mastery extends far beyond the dojo walls. While we train our students in the physical techniques of taekwondo, karate, and kickboxing, we equally emphasize the character development that transforms martial artists into community leaders. Our philosophy centers on the principle that earning a black belt means more than demonstrating technical proficiency—it means embodying the values of respect, integrity, and service that make our Surrey community stronger. Addressing Homelessness Through Direct ActionThe challenge of homelessness affects communities throughout British Columbia, and Surrey is no exception. Rather than simply acknowledging this issue, Jong Kim Martial Arts has made it a priority to take concrete action through organized community drives. Throughout the year, our dojo becomes a collection hub where students, families, and community members bring essential supplies: warm clothing for BC's harsh winters, non-perishable food items, personal hygiene products, and other necessities that many of us take for granted. What makes our approach unique is how we involve our students in every aspect of these initiatives. They don't simply drop off donations—they actively participate in organizing supplies, creating awareness materials, and accompanying instructors to local shelters and distribution points. This hands-on involvement teaches them that martial arts training includes developing compassion and taking responsibility for others' wellbeing. Grandmaster Edward Kim explains this connection: "When students learn to protect themselves through martial arts, they must also learn to protect their community through service. Both require courage, discipline, and commitment." Partnership with KidsPlay FoundationOur collaboration with KidsPlayFoundation represents one of our most impactful community relationships. This Surrey-based organization works tirelessly to provide positive alternatives for youth who might otherwise be vulnerable to gang recruitment or other negative influences. Special shout out to Mr Kal Dosanjh for affording myself to partner with his wonderful organization! Grandmaster Edward Kim serves as an ambassador at KidsPlay events, where they demonstrate martial arts character techniques, share their personal development stories, and connect with younger children who are just beginning their own journeys. These interactions often prove transformative for both the ambassadors and the children they mentor. The partnership benefits everyone involved. KidsPlay Foundation gains enthusiastic volunteers who understand the challenges facing local youth, while our students develop leadership skills and gain perspective on how their martial arts training can influence others positively. Educational Outreach at Newton ElementaryOur volunteer program at Newton Elementary School demonstrates how martial arts can enhance traditional education. Working closely with school administrators, we provide after-school martial arts instruction that focuses not just on physical techniques, but on academic support, conflict resolution, and positive social interaction. Special thanks to Principal Amy for affording myself the opportunity to mentor elementary students to develop self esteem, confidence and a feeling of community! Senior students from Jong Kim Martial Arts serve as assistant instructors in these sessions, learning to teach and mentor younger children. This responsibility helps them internalize the lessons they've learned while developing patience, communication skills, and leadership abilities that will serve them throughout their lives. The program has shown remarkable results in helping children build confidence, improve focus, and develop healthy ways to manage stress and conflict. Teachers report that students who participate often show improvement in classroom behavior and academic performance. Developing Tomorrow's Leaders TodayThese community involvement opportunities serve a dual purpose: they address real needs in Surrey while providing our students with practical experience in leadership and service. Every food drive, mentorship session, and volunteer event becomes a training ground where students learn to apply martial arts principles in real-world situations. Students discover that the discipline required to master a challenging technique translates directly to the persistence needed to organize a successful community event. The respect they show to instructors and fellow students becomes the foundation for meaningful relationships with community members from all backgrounds. This comprehensive approach to martial arts education ensures that when our students eventually earn their black belts, they've demonstrated not only technical proficiency but also the character traits that make them valuable community members. Deep Roots in Surrey's Diverse CommunitiesJong Kim Martial Arts has been part of Surrey's fabric for years, serving families from Newton, Delta, Fleetwood, Whalley, Cloverdale, and beyond. We understand the unique character of each neighborhood and work to ensure our community involvement reflects the diverse needs of the areas we serve. Our commitment goes beyond occasional volunteer work—we see ourselves as partners in Surrey's ongoing development and improvement. Whether addressing immediate needs like homelessness or working on longer-term goals like youth development, we approach community involvement with the same dedication we bring to martial arts instruction. Join Our MissionThe impact we've been able to make comes from the combined efforts of students, families, and community partners who share our vision of martial arts as a force for positive change. We're always looking for new ways to expand our community involvement and new partners who want to make a difference in Surrey.

Our taekwondo classes in Surrey emphasize both traditional techniques and modern self-defense applications. Karate builds strong fundamentals with hand techniques and structured training. If you're looking for karate in Surrey, you want a school that balances tradition with practical application. Kickboxing combines martial arts with fitness training. What Makes Great Kids Martial Arts Surrey ProgramsParents searching for kids martial arts in Surrey have specific concerns. Will my child be safe? Will they actually learn discipline? How do you keep young kids engaged? The best kids taekwondo programs in Surrey understand that children learn differently than adults. They need games, positive reinforcement, and clear structure. At the same time, they're building real martial arts skills that will serve them for life. We've found that kids who start martial arts training often become more confident at school, more respectful at home, and develop better focus for homework and other activities. The Journey from White Belt to Black BeltStarting martial arts in Surrey means beginning a journey that could last years. That might sound daunting, but it's actually one of the most rewarding aspects of training. Your first few months focus on basics – proper stances, basic kicks, and understanding dojo etiquette. You're building the foundation for everything that comes later. As you progress through colored belts, techniques become more complex. You'll learn advanced forms, sparring techniques, and even board breaking. Each belt test is a milestone that proves you're ready for the next level. Earning a black belt typically takes 3-5 years of consistent training. It's not just about physical techniques – you're developing mental toughness, leadership skills, and deep knowledge of martial arts philosophy. Training Options for Busy Surrey FamiliesWe understand that families in Surrey, Newton, and Delta have packed schedules. That's why the best martial arts schools offer flexible training options. Some families prefer evening classes after school and work. Others like weekend sessions that the whole family can attend together. Many schools now offer family martial arts classes where parents and children train side by side. For adults with demanding careers, lunchtime kickboxing classes or early morning sessions can fit better into busy schedules. What to Look for in a Surrey Martial Arts SchoolNot all martial arts schools are created equal. When researching taekwondo in Surrey or karate classes in your area, consider these factors: Instructor Qualifications: Look for certified instructors with years of teaching experience. The best schools have instructors who continue their own training and education. School Culture: Visit and observe a class. Is the environment positive and supportive? Do students seem engaged and happy to be there? Safety Practices: Proper equipment, controlled contact in sparring, and clear safety rules should be priorities. Curriculum Structure: The best programs have clear progression paths with regular testing and advancement opportunities. Benefits Beyond Physical TrainingStudents often discover that martial arts training impacts their entire life. Kids become more confident at school and better at handling peer pressure. Adults find stress relief and improved focus at work. The discipline learned in martial arts classes carries over into other areas of life. Students develop better time management, goal-setting skills, and the persistence to work through challenges. Many families tell us that martial arts became a bonding activity that brought them closer together while each member pursued their individual growth. As someone who's been part of this Surrey martial arts community for a while now, I have to say this was one of the most emotional and inspiring testing events I've witnessed. Seeing students I've trained alongside for months finally earn their new belts was incredible. The dedication and hard work everyone put in really showed, and I couldn't be prouder to be part of this martial arts Surrey school. More Than Just a TestWhat I love about belt graduations at Jong Kim Martial Arts is that they're never just about demonstrating techniques. Sure, you need to show you can execute the kicks, blocks, and forms properly, but Master Kim always emphasizes that it's really about showing growth in respect, discipline, self-control, confidence, and goal-setting. Watching the July 2025 belt testing, you could see these qualities in every single student who stepped onto the mats. It didn't matter if they were testing for their first yellow belt or going for their black belt - everyone carried themselves with dignity and determination. Students came from all over Surrey - Newton, East Newton, West Newton, Downtown Surrey, Fleetwood, Cloverdale, and other neighborhoods - and it was amazing to see this diverse community come together to support each other. The Energy Was IncredibleOver 60 students tested across different belt levels, and the energy in the room was electric. The Little Tigers (ages 5-6) were absolutely adorable - their focus and effort despite their young age was remarkable. Some of them were so excited they were practically bouncing, but when it came time to perform, they showed real concentration. The junior and teen students brought serious power to their board breaks. I watched one young man break through multiple boards with techniques that would have been impossible for him just six months ago. The growth was undeniable. But honestly, the black belt promotions got me the most emotional. These are students I've watched train for years, pushing through challenges, setbacks, and plateaus. Seeing them finally reach that milestone was incredibly moving. Standout Moments That Made Me ProudThere were so many memorable moments from the graduation. Emma L., who's only 9 years old, earned her green belt with such sharp technique and incredible spirit. You could see her confidence radiating as she performed her forms. Jayden C. from the teen class was particularly impressive. Not only did he spar with incredible control and power, but he also showed great leadership throughout the testing, encouraging younger students and demonstrating what it means to be a senior belt. Ms Kanwar from our adult classes continue to inspire everyone. They prove that it's absolutely never too late to begin your martial arts journey in Surrey. Their improvement over the past year has been remarkable. And our new black belts - wow. The years of hard work, dedication, and perseverance finally paid off. They're not just martial artists now; they're leaders in our school and in the Surrey community. What Makes This SpecialWhat struck me most about the graduation was how it represented everything that makes Surrey's Jong Kim Martial Arts special. This isn't just about learning kicks and punches - it's about building character. Our martial arts Surrey students carry the lessons they learn in class into their schools, homes, and workplaces. Belt graduations are really about celebrating the journey, not just the destination. Every student who tested had overcome challenges, pushed through difficult training sessions, and grown as a person. That's what makes these events so meaningful. The Support System Makes All the DifferenceI have to give huge credit to the families who support our students. The audience was packed with parents, siblings, and friends cheering everyone on. In Surrey, we really do have an incredible local martial arts community, and that support system is a big part of what helps our students succeed. Grandmaster Edward Kim and the instructors at Jong Kim Martial Arts have created something really special here. They're not just teaching techniques - they're building confident, respectful, focused individuals who make our whole community better. Looking ForwardIf you've been thinking about starting your martial arts journey, there's honestly no better time than now. Whether you're interested in building confidence, learning discipline, improving fitness, or just training in a respectful and structured environment, Jong Kim Martial Arts in Surrey is an amazing place to be. They offer classes for children, teens, adults, and even family programs. Who knows - maybe at the next belt testing, I'll be watching you earn your first belt! The next graduation could include students from anywhere in Surrey - it's incredible how this school brings together people from all different neighborhoods and backgrounds. A Community I'm Proud to Be Part OfCongratulations again to everyone who graduated in July 2025. You've made our Surrey martial arts school incredibly proud. Jong Kim Martial Arts - Surrey - Taekwondo. Unit 136 - 7536 130 Street Surrey, BC, V3W 1H8. 604-590-1000What I Wish I Knew About Surrey Martial Arts Etiquette Before Starting TrainingWhen I first walked into Jong Kim Martial Arts in Surrey, I was honestly pretty nervous. I'd never done martial arts before, and I wasn't sure what to expect. Would I make a fool of myself? Would I accidentally offend someone? Looking back now, I realize that learning proper dojo etiquette was just as important as learning the actual techniques. If you're considering martial arts in Surrey or just starting out, here's what I learned about etiquette during my first few months of training. Trust me, understanding these basics will make your experience so much better. The Bowing Thing Actually Makes SenseI'll be honest - the bowing felt weird at first. Coming from a typical gym background, I wasn't used to all the formality. But once Grandmaster Kim (9th Dan) explained the meaning behind it, everything clicked. Bowing isn't about being submissive or old-fashioned - it's about showing respect. At our Surrey martial arts school, we bow when entering the training area, to our instructors before and after class, and to our training partners before practicing together. It sets the tone for everything we do. After a few weeks, it became second nature, and now I actually appreciate that moment of acknowledgment and respect. The Power of Silence During TrainingThis was probably the biggest adjustment for me. In most fitness classes I'd tried, there was usually casual chatter and socializing. But in martial arts, once class begins, the atmosphere completely shifts. We listen closely to Grandmaster Kim and the assistant instructors without interrupting. No side conversations, no commentary on techniques, just focused attention. At first, I worried this would make the classes feel too serious or intimidating, but it actually creates this amazing learning environment where everyone can concentrate and improve. It's part of what makes the Surrey martial arts community at Jong Kim so effective - everyone respects each other's training time. Your Appearance Matters More Than You ThinkI learned pretty quickly that showing up in a clean uniform (called a dobok) isn't just about looking good. It reflects your attitude toward training and shows respect for your fellow students and instructors. But it goes beyond just having a clean uniform. Your whole attitude matters. Arriving on time (or better yet, a few minutes early), encouraging your training partners instead of criticizing them, and accepting corrections with humility - these things all contribute to the positive atmosphere. I remember one class where I was struggling with a particular kick, and instead of getting frustrated, an older student quietly offered some helpful tips. That's the kind of supportive environment that good etiquette creates. Understanding Rank and ExperienceThe belt ranking system seemed intimidating at first, but I quickly realized it's actually about creating a supportive learning structure. Higher belts aren't there to intimidate anyone - they're there to help and lead by example. As a white belt, I learned to watch and learn from those who'd been training longer. I avoided interrupting or trying to correct other students during class, especially since I was still figuring things out myself. This culture of mutual respect is what makes training at our Surrey martial arts school such a positive experience for students at every level. Safety Always Comes FirstOne thing that really impressed me about Jong Kim Martial Arts was how seriously they take safety. Good etiquette includes keeping your training partners safe, which means controlling your strikes, tapping out early during sparring if needed, and being honest about your limits. I remember during my first sparring session, I was worried about looking weak if I tapped out too early. But Master Kim emphasized that it's actually the smart thing to do - it keeps everyone safe and allows us to train consistently without injuries. This focus on safety is probably why so many families across Surrey trust Jong Kim Martial Arts with their training. How Etiquette Carries Over Into Real LifeWhat surprised me most was how the respect and discipline I learned in the dojo started showing up in other parts of my life. The patience I developed during training helped me at work. The respect for others became natural in my daily interactions. I think that's why so many families from Newton, East Newton, West Newton, Downton Surrey, Fleetwood, Cloverdale, and other Surrey neighborhoods choose Jong Kim Martial Arts for their kids and teens. It's not just about learning kicks and punches - it's about building character. Starting Your Journey the Right WayIf you're thinking about trying martial arts in Surrey, my advice is to embrace the etiquette from day one. Don't worry about getting everything perfect - everyone understands you're learning. The instructors at Jong Kim Martial Arts are incredibly patient and will help you understand what's expected. The free trial classes are perfect for getting a feel for the atmosphere and expectations. You can experience the respectful, disciplined environment firsthand and see if it's the right fit for you. Why Etiquette Matters in Surrey Martial ArtsAfter training for over a year now, I understand that etiquette isn't just about following rules - it's about creating an environment where everyone can learn and grow together. The respect, discipline, and humility we practice on the mat make us better martial artists and better people.
Whether you're a complete beginner or someone looking to get back into training, understanding these etiquette basics will help you get the most out of your martial arts experience in Surrey. And if you choose Jong Kim Martial Arts like I did, you'll find yourself part of a community that truly values these principles. You can learn more about their programs and schedule a trial class at www.jktkd.ca. Trust me, taking that first step with the right attitude and understanding of etiquette will set you up for an amazing martial arts journey. Jong Kim Martial Arts - Surrey - Taekwondo. Unit 136 - 7536 130 Street, Surrey, BC, V3W 1H8. 604-590-1000 author: Grandmaster Edward Kim c/o Jong Kim Martial Arts Finding Quality Kids Martial Arts Training Across Surrey's CommunitiesWhen I first started looking for martial arts classes in Surrey, I had no idea how many different neighborhoods and options there were to choose from. Living in Newton, I wanted something close to home, but I also wanted to make sure I found a school that could really help me grow as a martial artist. After visiting several schools across Surrey, I discovered Jong Kim Martial Arts in Surrey, and it's been an incredible journey ever since. What struck me most was how they truly serve the entire local Surrey community - not just one small area, but students from Newton, East Newton, West Newton, Fleetwood, Cloverdale, Guildford, and beyond. Why Surrey Families Choose Jong Kim Martial ArtsThere's something special about finding a martial arts school that feels like home. Grandmaster Edward Kim has spent decades building not just a training facility, but a real community here in Surrey. Whether you're a complete beginner or someone looking to advance your black belt skills, the atmosphere is welcoming yet challenging. Grandmaster Edward Kim is one of the highest ranking taekwondo masters globally. What I love most is how they've structured their programs. It doesn't matter if you're 5 years old or 50 - there's a place for everyone. The Little Tigers program is perfect for young kids who need to work on listening skills and coordination, while the adult classes focus on real-world self-defense and fitness. Convenient Location in Newton Serves All of SurreyThe school's location in Newton is honestly perfect. I can get there easily from my place in East Newton, but I've met students who drive from Fleetwood, Cloverdale, South Surrey and even further out. The evening and weekend class options make it work for busy families too. One of my training partners lives in Panorama Ridge, and she says the drive is totally worth it. Another friend from West Newton just hops on King George Boulevard and she's there in minutes. The accessibility really shows - this isn't just a Newton martial arts school, it's Surrey's martial arts school. What Makes the Training DifferentI've tried other martial arts schools before, and honestly, many felt either too rigid or too casual. Surrey's Jong Kim Martial Arts strikes this perfect balance. There's structure and discipline - you definitely learn respect and focus - but it never feels intimidating or overwhelming. The Taekwondo training is top-notch, but they also incorporate practical self-defense techniques that actually work in real situations. As someone who works downtown and sometimes walks to my car late at night, knowing I have these skills gives me genuine confidence. A True Community Across Surrey NeighborhoodsWhat surprised me most was how diverse the student body is. The family classes are especially cool - I've seen parents and kids training side by side, which creates this amazing bonding experience. It's not something you see at your typical gym or sports program. Flexible Options That Work for Surrey LifeLet's be honest - Surrey traffic can be unpredictable, and everyone's schedule is different. What I appreciate is how flexible the class scheduling is. Whether you can only make evening classes because of work, or you prefer weekend training, there are options. They also offer trial classes, which was huge for me when I was deciding. I could actually experience the teaching style and community before committing. No pressure, just a genuine opportunity to see if it's the right fit. Our Newton Martial Arts Dojo — Empowering Kids, Teens, and Adults Across SurreyWhen people ask what makes our Newton location special, I always start with the same story. A few months ago, a parent brought their 8-year-old daughter to our dojo after she'd been struggling with bullies at school. She was quiet, kept her head down, and barely made eye contact. Six months later, she's helping newer students with their forms. That transformation isn't unusual here—it's what happens when you combine expert instruction with genuine care for each student's journey. This transformation is our goal at Surrey's Jong Kim Martial Arts academy! The Legacy Behind Our Newton DojoWhat truly sets our Newton martial arts school apart isn't just our programs—it's our leadership. Grandmaster Edward Kim, our head instructor, brings something you simply won't find at other Surrey martial arts schools: a 9th Dan black belt rank and over 50 years of dedicated training and teaching experience. But here's what makes his story even more remarkable. Grandmaster Kim is continuing a family legacy that helped establish martial arts in British Columbia. His father, Grandmaster Jong Chan Kim, founded Jong Kim Martial Arts back in the 1970s and also holds the prestigious 9th Dan rank. When Edward Kim started his own school at just 16 years old, he was already carrying forward decades of authentic martial arts knowledge. The accolades speak for themselves—former national-level competitor, Taekwondo Hall of Fame Instructor Excellence Award winner—but what matters most is how this expertise translates into daily instruction. When Grandmaster Kim teaches your child or works with you personally, you're receiving guidance from someone who has dedicated his entire life to perfecting and sharing these arts. Martial Arts Programs Designed for Every Stage of LifeOver the years, we've learned that a 6-year-old learns differently than a 13-year-old, and adults have completely different goals and challenges. That's why we've structured our Newton programs specifically around age groups and developmental stages. Kids Program (Ages 5–11): Building Strong FoundationsOur kids' martial arts classes in Newton focus on much more than kicks and punches. At this age, children are developing their sense of self and learning how to navigate social situations. Through structured martial arts training, we help them build confidence naturally while developing crucial life skills. The physical benefits are obvious—better coordination, strength, and flexibility—but what parents really notice is how their children start handling challenges differently. They become better listeners, more respectful at home, and develop the kind of inner strength that helps them stand up to bullying without becoming bullies themselves. Classes are designed to be engaging and fun while maintaining the discipline that makes martial arts so valuable. We've found that kids this age thrive when they know what to expect and feel safe to make mistakes while learning. Teen Program (Ages 12–15): Navigating Critical YearsThe teenage years can be tough, and traditional team sports aren't right for every young person. Our teen martial arts program in Newton provides something different—a place where teens can challenge themselves individually while being part of a supportive community. These classes focus heavily on goal-setting and personal accountability. Teens work toward belt ranks at their own pace, learning that consistent effort leads to real achievement. Many of our current adult students started as teenagers in this very program, and they often tell new families that martial arts gave them confidence and direction during some of their most challenging years. The self-defense aspects become more practical at this age, but we always emphasize that the mental discipline and emotional control learned through martial arts are far more valuable than any physical techniques. Adults Program (Ages 15+): Never Too Late to StartWhether you're 16 or 60, starting martial arts as an adult brings its own rewards. Our Newton adult classes welcome complete beginners alongside people returning to martial arts after years away. Some students come for fitness, others for stress relief, and many simply want to challenge themselves in a new way. We combine traditional Taekwondo with practical kickboxing elements, giving adults a well-rounded experience that builds both physical fitness and mental focus. The beauty of adult martial arts training is that you set your own goals—some students pursue belt ranks with dedication, while others simply enjoy the weekly routine and community. Why Newton Families Keep Choosing Jong Kim Martial ArtsLocation matters, and our Newton dojo serves families throughout Surrey with convenient scheduling and a welcoming environment. But what keeps families training with us year after year goes deeper than convenience. Having a 9th Dan Grandmaster leading instruction means every student receives authentic, high-level guidance. This isn't someone who learned martial arts as a side hobby—this is a master who has dedicated his life to these arts and to sharing them properly. Our multilingual environment reflects Newton's diverse community. Instruction and communication happen in English, Punjabi, Tagalog, and Hindi, ensuring every family feels comfortable and understood. Perhaps most importantly, our track record speaks for itself. Alumni from our programs have gone on to become doctors, law enforcement officers, military personnel, and community leaders. They credit their martial arts training with teaching them discipline, respect, and perseverance—qualities that served them well beyond the dojo. Real Stories from Our Newton CommunityAmrita, a Newton parent, recently shared that her daughter started training at age 6 and is now 12. "She's more confident and disciplined than we could've imagined," she told us. "Thank you, Grandmaster Kim!" These transformations happen regularly, but they never get old. Jason, a former teen student, put it perfectly: "I was a shy teen when I joined. Now I'm in university and still training. Martial arts here changed my life." Stories like these remind us why we do this work. Call today! 604-590-1000 Finding the Right Martial Arts Classes for Your 7-10 Year Old in SurreyAs a parent in Surrey, you've probably watched your child bounce off the walls with endless energy and wondered how to channel that into something positive. Maybe they need help with focus, confidence, or just a fun way to stay active after school. If martial arts has crossed your mind, you're onto something good. Why This Age is Perfect for Starting Martial ArtsThere's something special about kids between 7 and 10 years old. They're old enough to follow instructions and understand concepts like respect and discipline, but they're still young enough to learn without the self-consciousness that kicks in during the teenage years. I've seen kids this age transform in martial arts classes. The shy ones start speaking up, the hyperactive ones learn to focus, and the anxious ones discover they're stronger than they thought. It's not magic—it's just what happens when kids have a structured environment where they can grow at their own pace. Beyond the obvious physical benefits like better coordination and strength, martial arts teaches kids life skills they'll use forever. They learn to set goals, work toward them consistently, and celebrate small victories along the way. Plus, there's something powerful about knowing you can defend yourself if you need to. What Makes a Good Martial Arts School for KidsNot every dojo is right for every child, and frankly, not every school understands how to work with this age group. When you're looking around Surrey, here's what actually matters: The instructor should genuinely enjoy working with kids. You can tell within minutes of watching a class whether the teacher is just going through the motions or if they really care about each student's progress. Look for someone who can be firm when needed but keeps things light and encouraging. Class size matters too. In a huge group, your child might get lost in the shuffle. In a class that's too small, they might feel pressure to perform. Somewhere in between is usually the sweet spot. The curriculum should make sense for their age. Seven-year-olds don't need to be sparring like teenagers, but they shouldn't be treated like toddlers either. Good programs for this age focus on fundamental movements, basic self-defense concepts, and building character alongside physical skills. Different Martial Arts Styles and What They OfferSurrey has schools teaching various martial arts, and each has its own flavor. Karate tends to be very structured with lots of traditional elements—great for kids who thrive on clear rules and progression. Taekwondo emphasizes kicking techniques and flexibility, which energetic kids often love because it lets them move dynamically. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu focuses more on grappling and ground techniques without much striking, which can be perfect for smaller kids or those who aren't comfortable with punching and kicking. Muay Thai incorporates more cardio and striking, appealing to naturally athletic children. The truth is, the style matters less than the school and instructor. A great teacher can make any martial art engaging and beneficial for your child. Finding the Right Fit in SurreyGiven Surrey's size and the number of neighborhoods—from Fleetwood to South Surrey, Newton to Cloverdale—you'll likely find several options near you. Location matters because consistency is key in martial arts, and you don't want a long commute to become an excuse to skip classes. Most good schools offer trial classes, and you should absolutely take advantage of these. Watch how the instructor interacts with the kids. Are they patient when someone doesn't understand a technique right away? Do they make corrections kindly? How do the other students treat each other? What Jong Kim Martial Arts OffersIf you're specifically looking in Surrey, Newton, or Delta areas, Jong Kim Martial Arts (www.jktkd.ca) has built a strong reputation for working with Surrey kids martial arts classes in this age group. They understand that every child learns differently and focus on creating an environment where kids can build confidence while having fun. Their approach balances traditional martial arts training with modern teaching methods that keep kids engaged. The classes are designed specifically for different age groups, so your 8-year-old won't be trying to keep up with teenagers or waiting for younger children to catch up. What Parents Actually Want to KnowLet's be honest about some common concerns. Yes, martial arts involves learning to strike and defend yourself, but reputable schools teach control and restraint along with technique. Kids learn when it's appropriate to use what they've learned (spoiler: almost never outside the dojo). Most programs recommend training 2-3 times per week. This gives kids enough repetition to build skills while leaving time for other activities and homework. You don't need to buy a bunch of gear right away—comfortable clothes work fine for starting out. The Real Benefits Go Beyond the DojoThe kids I've watched succeed in martial arts don't just get better at kicks and punches. They start doing better in school because they've learned to focus. They handle conflicts with siblings differently because they understand respect and self-control. They try new things because martial arts has shown them they can learn difficult skills with practice. For many Surrey families, martial arts becomes a positive constant in their child's life—something they can rely on for structure, friendship, and personal growth regardless of what else is happening. FAQs About Kid's Martial Arts in Surrey, BCQ: Is 7 years old too young to start martial arts? A: Not at all! Ages 7–10 is a great time to begin. Kids at this age are physically capable and ready to follow structured instruction. Q: How many times a week should my child train? A: We recommend 2–3 classes per week for optimal progress and retention. Q: What gear is needed? A: Just comfortable athletic clothing for the first class. We’ll guide you through getting the right uniform (gi) and gear if your child joins. Making the DecisionIf you're considering martial arts for your child, trust your instincts. Visit schools, ask questions, and see where your child seems most comfortable. The "best" program is the one where your child will actually want to show up consistently and where they'll be supported in their growth.
Most importantly, don't overthink it. The perfect time to start is now, and the perfect school is the one that feels right for your family. Your child's martial arts journey could be one of the best investments you make in their development.
