In life, an incredible superpower is the idea that one’s life is destined for greatness! As a new immigrant to Canada more than 50 yrs ago, I had everything going against me. I had to learn French, English, Italian, and Korean; all at the same time. I was born with bad vision and serious coordination challenges. Do you think this stopped me?! NO! My parents raised me with incredible discipline and focus. This in turn, gave me a heart that quitting never was an option! Excellence comes to those who battle challenges and overcome! Applying discipline drove me to be more than who I was yesterday. Step by step, skill sets resulted. Multiple languages were learned, academics increased, physical skills improved. Today, we do a great disservice to our kids if we coddle them and try to protect them too much. My generation of parents let ourselves work out the tough times and we prevailed as a result. We feel much greater satisfaction when we overcome momentous challenges and look back at all we accomplished! Martial arts in Surrey and Delta at the Jong Kim Martial Arts schools help students rediscover the inner power from within! This perseverance that Taekwondo teaches is worth millions in my opinion! One of Taekwondo’s main tenets is to garner “indomitable spirit!” We never let our Surrey martial arts students to give up on themselves! We push and encourage them beyond their limits. Only until they overcome each challenge, can they feel a true sense of pride. Surrey Taekwondo students start to really believe that hard work does pay off! Instructors mentor kids to keep moving forward on new techniques or physical boundaries. I encourage my students but I also push them further every day. I ask them do try 1% better everyday in each Surrey Taekwondo class until they are prepared to take on further kicking and punching challenges. Students do not realize their potential and how far they really can go in our Surrey Taekwondo school! They only see what’s in front of them. I see where they can be! This is crucial! I have been in their shoes many moons ago. Back then, my father and teacher, knew my true potential! This is why he pushed me beyond my limits. I remember one day he asked me to kick the heavy bag 1000 times without ceasing. Of course I lost wind after a few minutes of full forced kicks. He didn’t let me stop until I completed the task hours later. To develop my knifehand for board breaking for my first black belt test, he made me knifehand chop a small tree in our backyard. He said chop 1000 times everyday for 2 weeks. With blood and callused hand I persevered til the task was completed. Through these tough times, I never gave up! I didn’t know the word give up! This is one of the best gifts Taekwondo in Surrey and Delta gave to my character. Today, I am more than who I was yesteryear! Thank God! Delta and Surrey martial arts and taekwondo gave me the attitude of “ I CAN DO IT !” It’s really true that quitters never win and winners never quit! Upon digesting this concept into our hearts and minds, can anything prevent success? No! One Taekwondo master’s motto is I can do, he can do, why not me?! I tell my young students this before and during challenging Surrey martial arts drills and exercises. Their tiredness is replaced with a sense of hope that all things are possible to those who never give up! I remember in my first few years of university I got really low scores. I was used to being a straight A student up til grade 12. I became overwhelmed and I could only see the mountain ahead of me. I wanted to give up so many times. Instead, I calmed down and logically took steps to relax and discipline my study schedule into small achievable steps every day. On a big white board in my room, I laid down my study schedule and assignments hour for hour 1 month ahead of time. Every day I took a small chunk of assignments and accomplished the task due each day. My grades went from c+ to B+ and A’s. During my 3rd year I even scored a perfect 100% score on a final exam. All of this would not have been possible if I cowered down and gave up. Instead, I utilized what my dad’s taekwondo life skills he taught me during classes. My Surrey Taekwondo skills increased dramatically, my academics increased, and most importantly, my outlook on life became great! This is all thanks to my father and my master in Taekwondo! I owe him everything I am today! Passing on this great legacy of teaching ideals became paramount as I look forward to seeing new taekwondo students joining my academy every week! They don’t have the slightest clue in how I already am thinking and preparing their future through martial arts! My dream isn’t for them to necessarily become a taekwondo world champion; my main goal is for them to champion their life! To me, I use my Delta and Surrey martial arts program as a conduit to achieve much more! I develop their minds and hearts and shape it like a potter shapes the clay. Just the other day, an extremely and shy girl joined class. She was extremely timid. In my mind, I was already contemplating how I was going to develop her confidence through martial arts in Surrey and Delta training center. I plan to gently encourage her until her self esteem grows. When she is ready, I will start pushing her with further gentle encouragement. One day, I hope I can challenge her to extremes. When gold metals are purified, the result is 99.99% gold! I plan to make her know her true self worth by building character through physical martial arts challenges. I mentor by words. Words can destroy or build up! I choose the latter. Being one who has overcome many many challenges in life, I know what it takes to come out tougher, stronger, and more resilient through my dad’s guidance in our family’s Delta and Surrey Martial arts and taekwondo academy. Taekwondo is not just kicking and punching. Our surrey taekwondo is so much more! It is a safe place where students are surrounded by peers and instructors who really care. I care where my kids in taekwondo will end up in life! It matters! Know that if you encourage and guide someone to greatness, that this is so incredible! Delta and Surrey Jong Kim Martial Arts changes and mentor kids lives. I pass on the Kim family legacy to every student to wants to learn Delta and Surrey martial arts! Remember, you CAN DO IT! You can achieve greatness! But you can’t achieve until you dream it, work it, and achieve it! After all, isn’t HOPE so powerful? I believe HOPE epitomizes a much needed place in the hearts of every Surrey martial arts kid’s heart! As Martin Luther King Jr said, “Keep Hope Alive!” He sure had wisdom! How Taekwondo and Martial Arts in Surrey and Delta Delivers True Meaning into the lives of kids?
As a taekwondo expert for more than 50 years, I asked myself why some of my students stay for years; if not decades with me as their Taekwondo instructor? Sure, some students stay for a season or two but still there are many that have been with me for 10 or 20+ years! I outline my assumptions in the following breakdowns.
Major kids study asks what kids really need and want in life? As parents, our primary concern in life is the well-being of our children. Making our kids feel safe means we need to offer nurturance, care, concern, warmth, and affection. Navigating on the myriad of options of how to achieve this momentous task can seem overwhelming at times! Take heed! There is an answer! Kids, in martial arts in Surrey and Delta, are extremely astute in observing slight nuances in how people treat others. They are very perceptive and take in everything. They quickly can ascertain if someone is using them or if someone offers genuineness. I sometimes ask my long-term students why they stay so long at my taekwondo academy? The most common reason is they say, “ because you are kind and sincere.” I get blown away by this because it really humbles myself. Initially when a student joins, I think of several things in my reasoning on how I can satisfy my child clients. I ask are they here because they are bullied? Are they here because martial arts is cool? Are they here because they didn’t get fulfillment from playing team sports such as soccer or football? Then I ask the deep question. How can I make this kid feel better about themself and how to use Taekwondo as a conduit to achieve the end goal in order that the students is nurtured properly. I really do try to sincerely care for the needs of each of my students! They are here for a reason that is much deeper than the outward perceived notion that they want to defend themselves or just learn cool taekwondo moves. I tell everyone that I do not teach kids how to kick and punch; of course I do but I use taekwondo as a conduit to develop a student’s life to be more fulfilled and to have a greater sense of purpose in life! Every spare moment I have at the dojang, I try to ask insightful interactions with my students. Whether it be before class or during class or after class. I try not to ask questions where the answer is a simple yes or no. I believe this is a common mistake parents make; I am guilty of this also. Instead, I ask more thoughtful questions such as , “who made you smile today at school?” These are truly the questions kids want from their parents. I believe the reason is that it shows you want to really see life from the child’s perspective. And moreover, it shows you are genuine and sincere! At my Jong Kim Martial Arts school in Surrey and Delta, I ask such questions in which the student becomes front and center and I , as their taekwondo instructor, takes a back seat. This is paramount in my opinion. It opens a dialogue of sincerity; from which, a stronger bond develops. I become more than just someone who teaches them cool karate moves; I become someone who can now really influence and shape a child’s mind. I use this to develop their confidence, self worth, and self esteem. Kids who feel valued and cared for often have a higher propensity to perform at high levels in life; whether is taekwondo kicks or academics or just having pride in keeping a well-kept bedroom. Kindness is a superpower! It builds people up! Anyone can quickly destroy someone with some hurtful words; but one who builds others up are usually encouragers. To have this mind set takes an instructor who is emotionally balanced and one who has deep empathetic nature to care for others; sometimes at the expense of themself. Healthy minded people can do this! This is why I place utmost importance on kindness and sincerity in the way I teach and mentor my kids martial arts in Surrey and Delta area. The same philosophy holds true in my Surrey and Delta Taekwondo programs. Depression has taken on an uptick in society. It is one of the most destructive forces right now in the lives of kids and adults alike. As Surrey’s population continues to explode, so does loneliness. You would think that people would have more friends in a bigger city; but actually the opposite is true. In addition, technology also has its hand in creating more solitary lives. This is all the more reason, I believe the kind of community a martial arts school in Surrey and Delta becomes so important! The reason I hand pick who is allowed into my school is not because of elitism. I carefully decide that only kind people and kids gain admittance. I believe atmosphere and quality of the hearts of kids will foster others to become so much more! My students tell me, “ I wish you were the principal of my elementary school!” I say why? They reply because then school would be a place I would want to go to! I think kids just want a small inner circle of friends who really support each other. Isn’t this what we all want and need? When we go through some rough patches, don’t we want a consoling and objective confidant who can support us? This is what I and my taekwondo students attempt during our interactions at the Surrey martial arts school. Encouragement and a supporting atmosphere is where taekwondo students can develop resilience in life. As they reach physical challenges in learning new taekwondo technique, students realize they can achieve through not giving up! They ascertain that effort counts in life! As Rocky says, “ it’s not how hard life hits you! You gotta get up and keep moving forward! That’s how winning is done! You got a dream? Go get it! Do whatever needs to be done to achieve it!” To me, success and failure is not dependent on whether you actually achieve something necessarily; TRUE SUCCESS is how much EFFORT one puts into solving challenges in life. To me, these are true winners of life! People who digest the true meaning of perseverance! At Jong Kim Martial Arts in Surrey and Delta, I do not teach taekwondo! I use Taekwondo to develop self confidence, discipline, and PURPOSE! A kid who has true purpose, never fails! But instead, has a very bright future lying ahead! This is what Taekwondo really should do for each student that walks through the doors! With the support of parents, every child CAN DO IT! I am so thankful to the great hearted kids God has brought to me! I am the richest instructor, at heart, in the world because of my students!! This is true living in my opinion. Parents who wish their child to get a head start in life are turning to martial arts – taekwondo in Surrey and Delta. They know martial arts provides focus, discipline, and leadership skills. But when is the earliest age that is best? This is the million dollar question! From my 50 years experience as a student and instructor in Taekwondo and martial arts in Surrey and Delta, I outline which dynamics can answer this question:
Best Age to Start and why? Being a Korean parent, myself, we are particular driven to squeeze out as many life skills for our children at a young age. We put them in martial arts, music lessons, language lessons, Kumon, etc. We wish the very best future success for our kids and you are no different! To put it simply, there is no direct best answer but there are educated answers that fit each unique child. Children have different personalities which cannot be compared to others. They are unique! And as such, I answer according to this main premise. At Jong Kim Martial Arts in Surrey and Delta, we look at 5yrs old being the earliest to get the best bang for your buck! The reason is, this is the age they start to enter kindergarten; where kids initially learn social behavior requirements, following a structure routine, and expected norms for behaving through social interaction of what is acceptable or not behaviour. This coincides with a kid’s taekwondo program in Surrey and Delta! They form an important symbiotic relationship conducive to a child’s success in whether they can follow a kid’s program or not. Taekwondo or martial arts is meant to build a foundation of structured lifestyle, acceptable behaviour, learning basic taekwondo skills, discipline and focus in Surrey and Delta kids. They must all be intertwined in order to produce successful skill-sets which every parent longs for their kids. Intangible passion a child has for martial arts! Some kids who join martial arts in Surrey and Delta, have this incredible passion for taekwondo! Whether it stemmed from watching Cobra Kai or seeing a karate cartoon. This piques an incredible passion to this exciting martial arts craze. Their focus for martial arts can be so tunnel visioned that it can create a mind-set for that child to excel in karate program!!! Have you ever loved learning something in which you passion directly correlates to your success? Sure, of course! We all have; be it model building, learning to cook, etc. Kids martial arts is no different. An excited and enthusiastic child for martial arts drives them to do whatever it takes for mom and dad to let them join and to stay within the program! Passion goes a long way in life and taekwondo can be a catalyst for success in many areas of school life; such as academics, improved listening skills, and doing chores at home! Intent on purpose of putting child in martial arts program? Intent can be broken down, generally, into two different camps of thought reasoning.
Authoritative parenting is a parenting style or approach in which parents are responsive, supportive, and nurturing while setting firm limits on their children. Authoritarian parenting is another parenting style or approach in which parents are very rigid and use tough rules to control children’s behavior. At Jong Kim Martial Arts in Surrey and Delta, we believe the best approach to teach kid’s martial arts is a combination of these two ideals! And we have seen excellent results when sincere care goes into teaching kids. They are not just customers! Kids are human beings who needed to be treated with respect, honor, and valued self worth! Healthy kids are those whose parent and teachers set healthy boundaries of social behavior; as a major study has proven. They want and need guidelines to what is acceptable or not acceptable in their life’s boundaries. Skill sets of instructors that are conducive to kids enjoying their martial initial experience? Instructors who excel are those who are personable! They must genuinely have a heart for patience and understanding when it comes to instructing kids in martial arts in my opinion. Instructors need to be the adults; but at the same time, look at teaching from the perspective of a child. By incorporating this frame of thought, instructors can be extremely effective in their endeavour to introduce the proper foundation necessary for success in martial arts in Surrey and Delta! In summary, some kids have the above attributes as early as 4.5 yrs; while others start to have it at 8-10 yrs of age! It based on a case-by-case scenario of looking deep into each child’s unique personality and character traits and maturity level. Generally, I agree 5yr is the earliest age one should start martial arts. I sincerely hope this has been helpful. The reason I wrote this is because I never read a definitive and thoughtful answer to this age-old question. Author – Master Edward Kim c/o Jong Kim Martial Arts – Surrey – Taekwondo. Integrity, by definition, means being honest and having strong moral principles. It defines the most important essence of what it means to live a fulfilled life. Integrity represents who you are and what you stand for. It directly affects you and those whom you associate with; be it at school, at work, or in life in general. I systematically outline how integrity development, through kids martial arts programs in Surrey and Delta, is a vital area of concern. The most common martial arts which incorporate Integrity in their teaching philosophy include taekwondo, karate, and judo in the surrey and delta area. Taekwondo incorporates moral culture and is outlined in the first Taekwondo book created by General Choi. Within this book, is outlined to instructors and students alike, what is expected from general conduct of Taekwondo students and instructors. I outline, systematically, the approach I take in my martial arts career in the following:
Having the “right attitude!” Firstly, what is attitude? By definition, it means to have a settled way of thinking; something, typically one that is reflected in a person's behavior. To me, personally, I define it as my mental approach to every circumstance in life’s situations that may arise. In martial arts schools in Surrey and Delta, it is of grave importance that nurturing the right attitude in class! Too often, taekwondo schools overlook this because they wish to please kids. They want to a have a student who stays for all the wrong reasons. I strongly believe in laying out clearly, the expectations of my martial arts students from the get go. Kids want boundaries and rules! They honestly need it to feel more secure as outlined in major studies about the mental well-being of children. Kids who do not respect boundaries often are led astray to gang life or disobedience towards parents and classmates. Children to learn to understand boundaries are more apt to leading successful lives! During taekwondo class, I outline how listening is expected. I give an example that God gave us two ears and one mouth. A wise person listens more than he/she talks. This is something I learned early in life from my father through taekwondo class under my father’s guidance! Another example is how proper behaviour is expected. One way is through proper and sincere bowing during partner exercises. Bowing, in kids martial arts, represents the most important lesson in my opinion. It is akin to having a proper handshake when you greet someone. A firm and sincere handshake speaks volumes about one’s integrity; this along includes sincerity in eye contact. I can go on and on about this but I will move on to the next criteria. Honesty to oneself and others projects integrity. Honesty, to me, means being sincere and seeking the “truth” and allowing one’s life to be congruent to one another. We all know what truth means. It means we do not deceive ourselves about what is truly important in life. If a student blurts out in class, he/she is not being honest to themselves. We all know speaking in turn and not interrupting others demonstrates respect and thus the “truth.” Taekwondo classes, in Surrey and Delta, must include this ideal. Taekwondo kids in Surrey and Delta, learn way more if there are few interruptions during classes. Students, as a result, learn at an exponential rate. This key life concept is critical to the well-being of martial arts students. Importance of patience and its correlation to integrity I believe patience and self-discipline are congruent to one another. They are symbiotically related. Patience means not being hasty. Haven’t we all said something we shouldn’t have? Sure we have! During arguments we jump to our point of view immediately; without even hearing the other person’s story. Usually this does not lead to good results in confrontation settlements. Patience is to forbear oneself in order to hear both sides of the story so that we can come to a logical and peaceful solution. In life, kids and adults will inevitably need to deal with unruly people. How you handle it with patience and wisdom, will dictate the course of one’s life. Life is the culmination of thousands and thousands of wise decisions or actions. I teach my students to listen more. It is not easy because the are so excited to share who they are. I love this trait. Instead, I redirect their energy to be presented in a respectful and more meaningful way. Taekwondo kids at Jong Kim Martial Arts in Surrey, are taught to harness patience throughout the entire class. They wait their turns in line exercises; they work on a particular kick or punch while waiting for their next turn, etc. Martial arts kids in Surrey, learn to use their time wisely in harnessing exponential growth rate during classes. How to see tell-traits a Taekwondo – Martial Arts School’s Instructor has integrity? It’s called honesty. Who doesn’t want their child to have honesty? Of course, we all do! When students attend for trial class, I clearly explain what is included or not included in their enrollment. I mention gloves are not included and are necessary as training tools for martial arts classes and so on. Being straightforward is essential to building trust with anyone! Parents appreciate this approach. No one wishes to be deceived in anything. Integrity is thus tied to honesty and humility. Taekwondo kids learn honesty every minute in my Surrey martial arts program. They learn to give 100% effort. Kids know, through their conscience, whether an action or inaction is appropriate. I tell them conscience is God’s early warning system to let you know what is wrong actions and to heed your inner gut feeling. Learn to trust your gut instinct! It will protect you and lead to wise decision making for your life. Every moment of life is a “yes” or “no” decision! Another life lesson I teach my kids in Surrey martial arts or taekwondo class is the power of every moment! Yes, every single moment! I explain you can talk or you can do; you can try or not try; you can have the courage to volunteer for a kick demonstration or choose not to. Depending on each decision can alter drastically the direction of a child’s life in taekwondo class or at home. I choose yes to guide my life! When I was in elementary school, my music teach, who was in charge of the Christmas performance, asked me play the lead role as Santa Claus in the school play performance. I politely declined. You say why?! Honestly, it was because there was a tremendous amount of memorization and effort involved; I chose the easy route in this scenario. I regret it to this day. You may say what’s the big deal? The big deal is I missed out on an exciting opportunity to learn and be a part of school spirit and expanding my life’s experience! People go on vacations to experience other cultures and so on. Experience is something innate we all wish to do; it represents a more fulfilled life in my opinion. I tell my students that my very best students are the ones who volunteer the most during taekwondo kids class! Upon saying this, the hands all go up! This positive approach of dealing with one’s insecurities and gaining the freedom that I CAN DO IT attitude! Kids need taekwondo encouragement to take risks. I tell them that it doesn’t matter if you do a new kick or punch well or not. What matters is that you try. If one never tries, how can you they ever know that they can overcome? I explain being bold and courageous is a very noble trait. Kids martial arts in Surrey and Delta is not mainly about self defense skills. It is so much more! Taekwondo is mainly concerned with having the right attitude that if you prioritize effort over results, then one can bear the fruit of having a sense of self! This is why integrity is vital to Surrey and Delta kids in martial arts – taekwondo! Integrity culminates in a child’s sense of self, a sense of possibilities, and respect from others! This is the million dollar result! If this perspective on integrity resonates with you, I welcome your child to try our Jong Kim Martial Arts – Surrey – Taekwondo academy! www.JKTKD.ca Sincerely, Master Edward Kim 9th Dan Black Belt (sharing my insight from 50 years of my Taekwondo and martial arts career as a student and as an instructor…)
Jong Kim Martial Arts - Surrey - Taekwondo. Unit 136 - 7536 130 Street, Surrey, BC, V3W 1H8. 604-590-1000 ![]() Why kids love Jong Kim Martial Arts in Surrey, BC? There is something innate about how a child suddenly wants to learn Taekwondo, karate, martial arts, kickboxing, judo, or Kungfu in Surrey and Delta. It may stem from watching Karate Kid movie or viewing a martial arts kids cartoon. Some other reasons may be their parents were in Taekwondo in their childhood or a friend discusses martial arts on the playground. Whichever the reason, it is now that your child has an amazing interest in wanting to train in martial arts! At Jong Kim Martial Arts in Surrey, it is no different! The Cool Factor: Who doesn’t like to do martial arts? In the imagination of a child, they see them doing something so amazing by learning ancient art of kicking, punching, sweeping, and jumping like in the Karate Kid movie or Cobra Kai episodes. It just looks cool! Some kids are into soccer because of Messi; some into art because of Picasso and so on. However, your kid maybe wants martial arts because of Bruce Lee? This is what being a kid means; where your passion for doing something is an innate quality of optimism and excitement! We see this all the time at our martial arts studio. I love it! Self Defense against bullies: Who has never been bullied verbally or physically within their lifetime? I don’t know many people who have never faced intimidation; whether on the playground or in the work environment. Kids lives are no different! They seek an intangible will to feel confidence and not having to fear life. They see a kids being bullied and they think, “ I don’t want to be in that situation and I prefer to seek means on how I can protect myself!” Within the Surrey and Delta elementary school system, bullying now goes one step further in cyber-bullying; as if kids didn’t have enough challenges already! A majority of kids will, most likely, never end up in a full-on physical fight. I, myself, could have been in hundreds of fights in school because of being a minority, but am proud to say I never once engaged in a physical altercation. This was not by sheer luck but due to the proper upbringing from my Taekwondo instructor. Martial arts is the LAST means when it comes to a potential physical confrontation. Confidently, you must let the bully know that you are willing to stand your ground! This confidence is projected towards bullies and they seek someone else who is an easier target; so to speak. Confidence is the child’s best friend in these situations. At Jong Kim Martial Arts we instruct practical taekwondo skills which are powerful, effective, and immediate! Children know, deep in their heart, if they are developing power or not. They see the impact of their punch on pads and bags. They are extremely perceptive. Improved Coordination and Stress Outlet: Honestly, within the last 2 decades, kids have degraded in their physical condition and coordination. Perhaps, a major reason for this is a decreased funding budget on a sports/ gym program in school. Another reason may be that too much emphasis on academics leads to the thinking sports is really not necessary. During my stressful university exam seasons, I looked forward to punching the bag at the dojo. It relieved so much stress and I felt fresh and renewed sense of vigor. All the tensions kids build up need an outlet. We prefer physical release as a way for a child’s mental well-being. If a child bottles up that negative energy, one day he/she will explode like a volcano. Look at the incredible rise in road rage today. You encounter at least a few incidents on the way to work. Most adults don’t have a physical exercise routine to vent their frustrations. As a result, this negative energy, unfortunately, becomes directed at our loved ones; our wives, our husbands, and our kids. It’s true; the family that kicks together, sticks together! Our academy turn negative energy into a positive! This is why kids love martial arts in Surrey, Delta, Newton and beyond! They are encouraged by the taekwondo instructor and by other students! This is healthy; health for the mind and body. Thus, Taekwondo becomes a way of life for many kids in Surrey. Respect: All kids want and need to be respected! Who doesn’t? It is health for anyone’s mental condition in my opinion. Honest respect is paramount in anyone’s life! At our Jong Kim Martial Arts studio, it is MANADATORY that everyone respects everyone! This includes respected their adults, teachers, grandparents, and so on. This aspect of Taekwondo culture is crucial to the character building aspect of this martial art. My brother said, “ Respect given is respect earned!” It is so true! Even if the other party doesn’t reciprocate respect; it doesn’t matter. The reason is your character trait doesn’t diminish because of others! True character is constant; no matter the circumstances. Your resolve to be a person your family is proud of speaks volumes to others; be it at school, at home, or at the workplace. How you carry yourself is so paramount! This is a major reason why students stay with me for many years; even decades! Discipline: Most people associate discipline as a negative connotation; not me! I tell my students, “ Discipline is not the enemy; discipline is key to a successful life.” Without discipline, you cannot have any form of success in life. It doesn’t mean discipline cannot be fun; it can! You say how? I remember my older brother teaching a class and giving an example of this to his students. He said would baseball be fun if a player said I am not out on the 3rd strike?! Of course not. Rules and regulations are their to give solid groundwork how to behave and conduct yourself in a logical format. Baseball or taekwondo become more fun because of outlined regulations. My student understand the rules of the dojo. Kids like having set boundaries in their life and they really need it. Major study proves this. The study found kids are more mentally stable and happy having outlined rules by their parents. This gives them a sense of self within their boundaries of appropriate conduct and behaviour. Better Coordination and fitness: As kids institute a kick or punch technique over and over again, they will naturally see improved coordination. This correlation of cause and effect garners increased confidence and self esteem. Fitness levels also increase. Kids muscle strength improves rapidly. When I see my students sweating, I see stress relief, increased health, and most importantly, increased mental well-being! In summary, martial arts kids loves Jong Kim Martial Arts not just because they learn cool kicks and punches; they truly love that we provide an atmosphere of mental well-being and a productive outlet for stress. This is my mental approach in how I look at teaching true martial arts to kids in Surrey and Delta! It’s like the Mastercard commercial of old; it’s priceless!
